COVID-19 Data Warehouse Project

Aggregation of millions of records to aid in Louisiana’s response to the pandemic.

Throughout the COVID-19 pandemic, access to clear and accurate patient and testing data has been vital to Louisiana’s response. TEI is working with the Louisiana Department of Health to provide ETL and database development services to establish a COVID-19 response SQL data warehouse. This data warehouse is an important resource for Louisiana Department of Health in its ongoing response to the pandemic, housing more than 12 million unique records and creating aggregated datasets ready for integration with analytic and data visualization tools using Tableau Dashboards. Researchers can conduct ongoing analyses of the information, with both patient-level records as well as “location” records for outbreaks and places where exposures occurred and use this information to better inform stakeholders across the state.

Goals Achieved

Secure SQL data warehouse owned and hosted by the State

Real time Analytics to follow the patient or outbreak location

An information asset referenced for epidemiology research

Louisiana Public Health Epidemiologist.

The COVID-19 data warehouse saves the Epidemiologist time and increases their efficiency, allowing them to guide the state stakeholders and public in regard to COVID-19. The system also provides the ability to dig into the details of the data behind the analytics and helps the staff review the data for potential data quality issues.

Project Background

TEI has provided custom software development services and technical resources for the Epidemiology Department for the Louisiana Department of Health since 2008. Over the years various systems were developed to support the state programs and automate the day-to-day functions for the staff. The pandemic occurred while TEI was already supporting the Louisiana Early Event Detection System used for tracking epidemics. TEI’s knowledge and understanding of the state’s existing infrastructure and stakeholders allowed TEI to create the SQL data warehouse without excessive coordination and overhead.
